Maakrit’s Story by Priya Jain

In 2016, I had the opportunity to learn chocolates, confections and jams from a reknowned academy and a very well known chocolatier. While I was learning, I became aware of the ingredients which go into the making of these treats were highly processed sugars and artificial ingredients that can be extremely harmful to both our health and environment. As a mother, I couldn’t imagine feeding my kids with these type of treats. During the workshop I was laughed upon and humiliated for questioning the ingredients, additives and sugars as I couldn’t understand them. As they say if you are rejected from something, it’s god’s redirection to something better. This realisation was a turning point in my life and that’s how the foundation stone for Maakrit was laid. With each step I felt god was sending one of his angels to move ahead in the journey and to do something meaningful. My mothers, the unsung heroes became my inspiration and my kitchen became my lab I grew up eating Badaam chutney which my mother made every morning. My mother in law is a brilliant cook. I learned making all the chutneys, pickles and badaam panjiri from her. I read books on ayurvedic food principles and after many trials could I successfully transform all these homemade delicacies into commercially saleable products with all natural and nourishing ingredients. I did a lot of research and formulated recipies with flowers, fruits, vegetables and spices that provide maximum health benefits especially for diabetics, cancer patients, kids and in general for everyone. I make huge efforts to gather best and purest ingredients from all over the country like Burans flower from Himachal Pradesh, Lakadong Turmeric from Meghalaya, Ceylon Cinnamon to name a few.
Chocolate making has always been my passion, but making all natural chocolates was a big challenge. God again sent one of his angels to help me achieve this, my mentor Rakesh Saini. He is a very humble human being and an excellent mentor. He supported my vision and made every possible effort to help me achieve my dreams. He even damaged his grinders while experimenting with different fruits for our chocolates. After many trials and brain storming we came up with all natural chocolates with dates and raw sugar, the healthiest natural sweeteners. Since the inception of Maakrit, we have been able to make a meaningful impact. I look forward to continue this journey with a lot of gratitude towards God and all of his creations.
